Modeling and the Systems Engineer

On July 27, 2015, I gave a Keynote Address to the 2015 Summer Simulation Multi-Conference for the Society for Modeling & Simulation International (SCS). A society that is dedicated to advancing the use of modeling & simulation to solve real-world problems since it was first formed in 1952. The Multi-Conference was at the beautiful Palmer House Hilton in downtown Chicago -- one of the nation’s longest continually operating hotel, since 1873, and one of three “grand” hotels in the city.

My speech touched on the micro-verse, the history everyday reality, Internet of Things, the Science of (or lack there-of) Systems Engineering, the concept of Emergence, and M&S within the INCOSE’s Future of Systems Engineering 2025:- A World In Motion. It ended with a big heartfelt thank-you to all the modelers present.

Delayed Exam Transition to SEHv4 is good news!

INCOSE’s original plan was to release the new SE Handbook version 4 (SEHv4) earlier this year, right after ISO 15288 standard, Systems and software engineering-System life cycle processes, was released. Which was supposed to be in January 2015. Well as they say, “Best laid plans of mice and men.” Turns out the  ISO 15288 standard wasn't published until 15 May 2015 so INCOSE will not be publishing SEHv4 until mid July. Just in time for the INCOSE SE International Symposium.

Even though this delay may be frustrating, there is a silver lining  … because of the delay in publishing SEHv4, INCOSE  will now continue offering the current exam, based on SE Handbook version 3.2 through 31 December 2015.  This will be the default exam for all candidates unless you submit a formal Request for the vs 4 exam.

So we no longer have the June 30th cut-off date hanging over our heads. We now have a December 31st cut-off date hanging over our heads. Read about the changes at the INCOSE website and the INCOSE Certification Blog

So if you ever thought about getting SE Certified, this may be the time to do it. The new handbook will have more pages and processes, so sign up NOW and learn SEHv3.2 before the December 31, 2015 deadline. Our video course  allows you to study at your own pace and in your time frame. So sign-up now. Keep in mind, SEHv4  will have 31 processes, while the older SE Handbook had 26.

Updated SE Standard adds even more Processes

According to a recent news item at the new and improved INCOSE website* the “ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288:2015, Systems and software engineering—System life cycle processes, has recently passed balloting and is nearing publication.  This is the standard upon which INCOSE aligns the process and life cycle content in the SE Handbook.  The SE Handbook Fourth Edition will be released shortly after final publication of 15288.”

SE Handbook version 4  will have 31 processes, while the older SE Handbook had 26.  See below for a comparison between the new and the old Handbook. I highlighted the changes in RED.

But you still have time to take the certification exam based on the SE Handbook version 3.2. The last date to take the exam based on the old version is 30 June 2015. But you need to submit your application NOW and then take my video on-line class to prepare you to pass the exam the first time. Our video course  allows you to study at your own pace and in your time frame. So sign-up now before time runs out.

Changes to INCOSE Certification Exam Program as they transition to SE Handbook Vs 4

Big news for 2015. Sometime this spring INCOSE will release SE Handbook version 4 (SEHv4), dependent upon the approval and release of the new version of ISO 15288. This affects the INCOSE Certification Program in several way:

  1. The last date to take the exam based on SEHv3.2 is 30 June 2015.
  2. All certification applications received in July 2015 will be processed in August 2015.
  3. The start date for the knowledge exam based on SEHv4 is 13 July 2015.

If you ever thought about getting SE Certified, this may be the time to do it. The new handbook will have more pages and processes, so sign up NOW and learn SEHv3.2 before the June deadline. Our video course  allows you to study at your own pace and in your time frame. So sign-up now before the course prices are raised to $500 in February 2015.

The Future of Engineering (Vision 2025)

[On Sept 17, 2014, I presented the same material as a webinar to the INCOSE Central Arizona Chapter. See the video here.  All my references are in the link below.]

Last night, Aug 20, 2014, I had the privilege to speak to the INCOSE WMA Chapter, the largest chapter on the planet. I gave a lecture on INCOSE Vision 2025.  I talked about how difficult it is to predict the future. But I say System Engineers will be at the forefront of innovation and invention as we bring a holistic point of view to these complex and world spanning problems. So take your place in making a better world and a brighter future.
