The INCOSE International Symposium (IS) was held June 27-20, 2022 in Detroit, Michigan. This was the first time that we had a live IS since 2019 in Orlando. It was a hybrid meeting, meaning it combined virtual and live attendees for the tutorials, lectures, and panels. This will be the format for events for the foreseeable future.
Teaching the Handbook
We presented a Tutorial on Sunday entitled “Systems Engineering by the Book.”
Abstract
The INCOSE SE Handbook is a key product for the SE Community. Not only does it provide a foundation for our profession but it also is the basis for the INCOSE SEP exam. This tutorial will provide an overview of the SE Handbook by taking it apart from the inside out. By using a comprehensive, context-informing Process Flow diagram, the instructor will cover all the Processes from the SE Handbook from the Life Cycle Model Management Process to the Disposal Process. Thus making this tutorial a compressed SE Fundamentals Course. Although this tutorial will not go into depth, it does provide an effective way to study the handbook in a more logical manner.
I had the students (both virtual & live) split into teams to reverse engineer a utility belt developed by Wayne Enterprises for some unofficial law enforcement personnel (with a bat fetish). They also developed a Mission Statement, Stakeholder Requirements, System Requirements, and methods to V&V the product. It was fun and very successful!
A booth at the Exhibit Hall
We also set up a booth within the IS Exhibit Hall where a bunch of commercial and academic organizations have booths in order to provide attendees with information, demonstrations, and general networking. We set up our proprietary chart so we could explain the context of the Systems Engineering Technical Processes as they operate within the envelope of a Project as dictated by Agreements set forth by an Organization. The chart seems complicated at first sight but I break it down by the Handbook chapters and overall process types (Technical, Project Management, Agreements and Organizational Enabling.)
We handed out copies of the chart, some mugs, and a few copies of our new Study Notebook for INCOSE SEP Certification Exam Preparation Course [available from Amazon for only $5]. We also handed out a few flyers explaining our services.
We enjoyed catching up with old friends and were happy to make new ones as well! All and all, another successful Symposium and we look forward to the 33rd Annual INCOSE International Symposium in Honolulu, Hawaii. Hope to see you there.
